I contributed to a number of open source projects for my CoRE project. These included FreeBSD, GNU nano, and Telex. These improvements were for anything from comment typos to fixing crash bugs. Being involved with an open source community is a unique experience. There is no one telling you what to work on and no tangible reward. Instead of getting paid you earn the respect of one's peers.
